beginning sewing success

Check out our proud students! Our first Beginning Sewing class has wrapped up and we are thrilled with how these ladies have progressed. Maren, Angie, Jenna, Katie, Ashlee, and Marybeth each made coasters, pillowcases, and zipper pouches and are on their way to many more sewing adventures. We had so much fun with these girls and are really looking forward to the next cycle of classes. If you are interested in joining Beginning Sewing for Adults in the fall, registration is now open online or in the shop.  If you can sew but want to expand your skills into quilting or clothing, keep your eyes open for Beginning Patchwork and Clothing Construction to be added to the class catalog soon.

from afar

What a lovely surprise on Tuesday when Mel, my friend and hairstylist (she’s a genius), and her friend Michelle (who’s handiwork you can see in the costumes of the upcoming film Gentleman Broncos) strolled through the door at Suppose.  They drove all the way from Salt Lake City to check things out and I had a blast giving them a tour of my favorite fabrics. I think they enjoyed it too because they left with some good loot. I can’t wait to see the concoctions it all becomes, especially Mel’s birdie couch pillows and Michelle’s dress of felt.

guild happenings

Suppose Creative Guild needs a little attention on the blog.  I am thrilled with our awesome presidency.  They are super creative and have started planning a great year for us.  Here they are, Anita, Desiree, and Lauree, with a few of their creations.

One of the best parts of our monthly business meeting is show & tell.  Norma’s kitteh quilt created a stir.

I loved her scrap quilt.

Tina actually hand stamped those flowers onto the blocks.

We’ve had some more fun times that I’ve still got to blog.  For more info about the guild, visit the info page.

emily’s show & tell

Like Kathy said, we love it when our customers bring in their show and tell.  This is Emily, the granddaughter of Suppose’ loyal friend Joye.  It must have been a flurry of creativity at Joye’s house while Emily was visiting.  Here she is showing off a purse she made of three fat quarters she’d picked out, designed and sewn all by herself!

Check out the detail of that watermelon applique.

Emily and Joye took our Sudoku quilt class last week and have nearly finished the quilt top.

They used fabric from local designer Julie Popa’s debut collection, Sunshine Serenade, and it turned out just adorable!  I felt truly inspired by Emily’s skill and creativity that day and can’t wait to see what she brings in next time she’s in town!

bring it

You are all so talented.  I love it when you bring in your projects, finished, or in the works, to share with us.  Beginner or seasoned stitcher, don’t be afraid.  We are only here to encourage you.  Here we have a few examples that have come through the door recently.

Linda has made her first big quilt for a granddaughter.  She brought the quilt in after work (and so courteously dressed for the photo in matching colors.)  We in the shop loved it and think she has one lucky granddaughter!

“Wow” was what we kept saying when Leigh brought in her VW bus blocks.

She is personalizing each of them with the most darling applique and embellishments.

Just look at the detail. Those are beads on the kabobs.

Her embroidery is so charming.

I have to admit, sometimes I’m so excited to see your projects that I completely forget to get out the camera.  Just remind me.  We hope you are adding your project to our Flickr group.  And all you far away friends, we hope you will add your photos there as well.  It just adds to the fun.

man up, er…

The web shop is back up!  Which means now we can start posting links to all sorts of things we’re excited about.  Our class catalog is also available online now, for locals who would like to register for a class but don’t want to have to come into the shop.

man down

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

That’s what my niece says if something tips over like a trash can, or maybe this stack of jelly rolls that she piled up one day.

That’s what she’d say about the Suppose web shop today.

The Suppose web shop is down due to some upgrades to the web shop that are taking longer than planned.  Hopefully this means that when it’s back up it will be better than ever.  Thanks for your patience as we get things figured out!

teach me please!

Today we’re changing it up by finally getting me, Kathy, on the blog.  Good thing too, because I have a lot to say.  I’m bursting with fun thoughts, and I’m anxious for you to get to know me, if you don’t already.

Classes have started here at Suppose and oh boy, are we having fun.  As a teacher, it’s great to meet people and make new friends.  As a student, it’s wonderful to learn new techniques, or be in a class with the camaraderie of others all working on a project.  I’ve been both teacher and student here at the shop in the last month.  I sat in on Jennifer’s pillowcase class and actually finished mine, and it’s really cool if I do say so myself.  It’s going in my guest room at home.

My applique class filled up to capacity so I was a bit nervous as the teacher, but not to worry.  My students were patient and diligent and I think they learned a technique that they will really like.

Now, just to toot my horn a bit here.  I finished the quilt I have spent the last couple months working on in fits and spurts as I also worked at opening the shop with Jo.  It is a Blooming Nine-Patch from the book Tradition With a Twist by Blanche Young and Dalene Young Stone.  I used all Kaffe Fasset prints, and had a little personal party picking out the fabrics I would use because they are so pretty.

You really must make it into the shop to see it in person if you can.  quilted it for me in a Kaffe-ish all over floral design and it turned out spectacularly.  On the back, I made an homage to the nine patch by sewing a big, or should I say giant, triple nine-patch. It made it a reversible quilt–a bonus!

And to top it all off, I’ll be teaching a class so you can make your own Blooming Nine-Patch quilt.  It will be the complete journey, from choosing your fabrics to adding a border.  We’ll take three sessions to get you well on your way, if not finished, and knowing all the tricks.  I can’t wait to see some more of these quilts in the shop!

Now, dear reader, you have had a pretty good introduction to me.  I hope I see you in a class (or in the comments!) soon, so I may know you too.
